Abbot Colomba Marmion 1923 - 2023

As we approach the 100th anniversary of his death, let us retrace the career of this Benedictine monk, author of the famous book Christ, The Life of the Soul.  To a bishop who was visiting him, Pope Benedict XV highly recommended the writings from Abbot Marmion: "Read this.  It is the pure doctrine of the Church", and to the author, who was received in an audience, "I make use of it for my spiritual life."

Brief presentation of Abbot Marmion’s works

In 1895, Marmion gave a retreat for a small group of nuns. The notes for those talks contained in kernel an idea he would develop during the next 20 years.  In its finished form it became Christ, the Life of the Soul – a book that was first published privately, but then rapidly, unexpectedly, became an "overwhelming success" in the Catholic world.

Through his writings, Abbot Marmion had considerable influence on the spiritual life of priests, religious and laity between World War I and World War II.

The main books of Abbot Marmion are Christ, Life of the Soul (1917)Christ in His Mysteries (1919) and Christ, Life of the Monk (1922).

There was essentially "nothing new" in Marmion's work. Rather, his "revolution" was effected by "a return to what was fundamental," specifically his restoration of "Christ as the center of all... spiritual thinking."

A second major theme of his work is the doctrine of divine adoption in Christ.

May the reading of Abbot Marmion’s books help our faithful to put into practice the motto of Pope St. Pius X “To restore all things in Christ.”
