A Contract of Alliance with Our Lady
Traditionally, the Month of June is the Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is also the time of the priestly ordinations in the seminaries of the Society of St. Pius X of Dillwyn, USA, and Ecône, Switzerland. On these occasions, let me invite you to meditate on the great connection between the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the priesthood.
Last year, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Fatima, we spoke at length on this famous message of Our Lady, all centered on the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The privileged souls who had the blessing to attend the pilgrimage to Fatima last August may remember the famous statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, near the basilica of Fatima, which is a reminder that the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is always linked to the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
According to St. Louis de Montfort, the true devotion to Mary always leads to Our Lord Jesus Christ. As the Mother cannot be separated from Her Son, so the Son ought not to be separated from His Mother. It is in that sense that we must interpret the words of Our Lady at Fatima: “My Son want to establish in the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart.”
At first the message of Fatima was addressed to three children, but they were not to keep it for themselves. They had to pass it on to the priests, and to the pope, who was supposed to reveal its contents. As a matter of fact, the priests are the instruments chosen by that God to minister to men and spread these devotions, but how it will happen? Let us listen to St. John Eudes, the great apostle of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Most Pure Heart of Mary, which was the ancestor to the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
St. John Eudes was deeply convinced that, to be able to spread them efficiently, the priests must be deeply impregnated by these devotions. The saint had some beautiful words by which he describes the union between the priest and the Virgin Mary. He forged a name which no one had dared to use before, speaking of a contract of alliance (covenant) when he referred to the bonds which united the priest to Our Lady:
“0 admirable and totally lovable Mary, it is no marvel that you consented to be the spouse of the least of all men and the greatest of all sinners, who, since his earliest years, has dared to choose you as his only and exclusive spouse. He chose to consecrate his body, heart, and soul to you. The reason for this is that you imitate the infinite goodness of Jesus, your Son, who consented to be the spouse of such a miserable and sinning soul as mine....
As the bride and the groom should love one another with a sincere, constant and cordial love, so I, too, have been given all the possible proof of your incomparable favors toward me, O most lovable one. In the same way, I also know the flame, the depth and the tenderness for you of my loving heart....
As the spouses are held responsible to mutual assistance and to console one another in their infirmities, illnesses and afflictions, my desire is also to serve and console you according to the power which God gives me. I will do so in the persons who are poor, the sick, the afflicted, in whom I will see you as a mother is seen in her children. I beseech you once again, most beloved one, to help, protect and sustain me in all of my corporal and spiritual needs. Just as the bride and the groom should have only one heart and one soul, may I also have a perfect unity with you in soul, spirit, will and heart, if it pleases you, 0 Queen of my heart. Take away my heart and give me yours so that this may happen…
Behold, 0 Queen of Heaven, the conditions of the contract of the holy alliance which you have inspired me to make with you, as the most holy spouse of my spirit and my heart.”
While reading these words from a saint, please remember the young men who will be ordained priests in Dillwyn on June 22, and in Ecône on June 29. May these young levites be linked with the Immaculate Heart of Mary with such a contract of alliance by which they will become true apostles of Jesus and Mary, according to the original title of the Society of St. Pius X, “The Society of the apostles of Jesus and Mary.” And also keep in your prayers your priests, who have been labouring in the field of souls for a number of years and are going to celebrate the anniversary of their ordination, so that they will remain faithful to the contract of alliance that they sealed with Our Blessed Mother on the day of their ordination.
